There is nothing quite like a rainy morning. Yes, it’s gloomy and uncomfortably humid. But the quiet, calming effects are therapeutic. The silence and stillness fall over and around you as the soft rain. The unwanted busyness of the world has been chased away. There is time for discovery, contemplation, and reflection. The pressure is off. There is no need to hurry. Without distraction, you are free to think and dream. The experience is a balm for the soul, just as it gives a much-needed drink of fresh water to the natural world.
I smoke my pipe as I sit and observe the world. The cherry flavor fills my mouth and scents the air. I am reminded of one of my favorite quotes by C. S. Lewis,
“A pipe gives a wise man time to think and a fool something to stick in his mouth”.
Perhaps Roger Miller is more appropriate,
“Some people walk in the rain, others just get wet”
Things don’t seem so hard in these moments. Insights can be gained. New paths can be seen. Truths can be admitted, even if too shaming before. Somehow or other you know things will be alright. This is meditation, in a pure, basic form. It tempts you toward prayer, even if you don’t believe. Because how can you fail to notice your human spirit rising to meet the majesty of God’s nature in the absence of the irritating noise of everyday life.
Don’t miss these special days. Relish in their calmness and confidence. There will be time for laughing, crying, chasing, worrying and arguing in the days ahead. Today, just listen, feel, relax and contemplate as you draw nearer to the wonder of the creation in which you live.
