Finally Turning the Page

As I feverishly look forward to 2021, the year that couldn’t get here too quickly, I’m anticipating the news headlines to come. I desperately want to forget the name of our 45th President and bask in the warmth of sanity, integrity, competence, respect, and empathy. Let’s follow our new leader into the future of a new America, shall we? Let’s make living in America fun again.

Twitter reports there were no tweets from the President on his first full day in office. The official government account of @POTUS, now under the control of President Biden, was completely inactive. Anecdotal reports from across the user community speak of slower, shorter, and calmer Twitter feeds to the welcome relief of most everyone. In a related statement, the White House released a memo to all executive departments requiring public information to be released through normal Press channels and not Internet Social Media.

President Biden issued an Executive Order today terminating the employment of all political appointees of President Trump. In the press statement issued with the order, the President is quoted as saying “It’s high time that our senior government executives are chosen for their expertise rather than their personal loyalties, campaign contributions, or family relationships”.

This afternoon’s White House Press Briefing was informative, cordial, and completely without controversy as new Press Secretary, Jennifer Psaki, took questions and answered them for approximately 35 minutes from nearly everyone in the briefing room. No reporters were ignored, chastised, or embarrassed. Many members of the press informally observed how refreshingly informative and free of drama the event was. This reporter wonders if this might become a trend in the new Administration.

President Biden’s schedule for the week was released to the Press today. He is scheduled to be at work in the Oval Office all week. No trips are planned outside Washington for the immediate future. The White House travel office has indicated the public should expect to see Air Force One on the ground for some needed rest and preventive maintenance for the next 30 days or so.

President Biden spoke by phone today with the chief executives of several foreign governments including France, Germany, and the United Kingdom informing them of the United States’ intention to rejoin the Paris Climate Agreement of 2015 just as soon as the appropriate procedures and documentation could be completed.

In a late-afternoon statement, the White House announced that the non-scalable security fence, erected around the White House by the Trump administration will be immediately torn down. The fence will be returned to its 2015 design, allowing for pedestrian-friendly viewing from the street while still ensuring sufficient access security.

Secretary of Homeland Security, Alejandro Mayorkas announced today that, in accordance with President Biden’s directive, the removal of all walls, previously erected along the U.S.- Mexico border, will begin on March 1st.

President Biden directed today that the U.S. Government security clearances of Jared Kushner, Ivanka Trump, Michael Flynn, and several other senior Trump administration officials be revoked. Secretary of Homeland Security, Alejandro Mayorkas, released an accompanying statement in which he declares that the U.S. will never again flagrantly ignore the proper security procedures needed to ensure our complete trust in all government employees.

Today Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer has scheduled debate on HR 1, the “Human Justice” bill, passed by the House of Representatives on February 10th. The bill makes the death of any unarmed person while in police custody or in the process of being apprehended by police a felony punishable by 50 years in prison. President Biden has stated his eagerness to sign it into law the very minute it arrives at his desk.
